When your transmission needs to be replaced, there are a few options open to you, depending on what you want to do. They all have their benefits and their disadvantages.

Rebuilding Your Transmission

One choice open to you is to rebuild your transmission. The mechanic that you are working with will take your transmission and take it completely apart so that they can replace the problem pieces and try to get it working the way that it should again. One problem with this is that it can be labor intensive so that you may not save any money because you are going to run into a lot of man-hours, which will cost you more money. There's also the issue as to whether or not they will actually be able to rebuild your transmission. You may end up spending money and not have a transmission that you can actually use.

Buy a New One

Another option open to you is to buy a new one. This transmission will generally be OEM, or original equipment manufacturer. That means that the new transmission will be exactly like the one that came with your car. That's because it was made by the same people who made the transmission for all the cars that the manufacturer uses. While buying new can mean that you are getting the exact same kind of transmission, one that has no wear and tear on it, the problem is that it may be more expensive than you can afford, especially if you are on a tight budget.

Buy a Used One

A used transmission for sale will have already been rebuilt. If you choose to go with that, you are going to get a transmission that is similar to the one in your car. The nice thing about this is that you are going to save money. While the transmission has been rebuilt and refurbished, the labor to do that has already been done and by someone else. The mechanic will be able to just drop the transmission into your car. You are going to be able to save money when you this route. You might worry about how the transmission will work, since it already has some wear and tear on it, but everything within the transmission will have already been replaced, repaired, and inspected, so it should give you years of great service.
